September 27th marks 27 years without Cliff Burton but he is still very much alive through his music and through Metallica. Cliff, there are no words to describe how much I admire you and how much you’ve been an inspiration to me in my life. You introduced me to so many different things from books I would never have read, to movies, bands, and so much more.
Before I listened to Metallica I honestly never paid attention to the bass in songs and I never realized how important it was. But I still remember how huge it was to me and in many ways life changing when I heard the intro to For Whom The Bell Tolls for the first time. Of course, I thought it was Kirk for the longest time (i was a total metallica newbie) but when I found out that the crazy shit I heard at the beginning was YOU well, I was hooked. Suddenly, the bass was cool and I gave a shit what the guitars and drums sounded like. I now knew what James’ guitar sounded like and what Kirk’s was like, etc. After that I started getting into more bands and metal soon became a huge part of my life. But there has never been a band as important or meant more to me than Metallica and I owe part of that to you.
Cliff, thank you for the music you created, for always totally being confident in yourself and your abilities (which is another area that you have influenced me), and for helping create the foundation and spirit of Metallica.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
REST IN PEACE
